How you can help

Please contact Vicky if you have anything pertinent to add that did not appear in her books.  Many of the old ranger stations are practically unaccounted for and only appeared on old maps or in a “withdrawal’ file for an administrative site.

Any corrections, updates, and photos would be most welcome.  Please reference the book and page number and provide correct information through the “Contact” section.

Please contact Vicky if you have any stories about working or living at the ranger stations, or information regarding the construction, demise, relocation, or removal of any of these facilities. It is very likely that some of the information is already outdated with buildings having been removed since these books were written.  Please provide this information through the “Contact” section.

If you have photographs of some of these facilities that have not been included, please send an electronic copy, preferably at 300 dpi.  The author is especially interested in photos of facilities for which no photos were found.

Are you interested in being involved in a book on the Nez Perce / Clearwater National Forests?   Vicky is just starting a new book about the ranger stations of the Nez Perce and Clearwater Forests in Idaho and would love to have your stories, information or photos.  Please provide information through the “Contact” section.

Mystery Photos

Mystery cabin

These photos were found in the collection of Henrietta Crockett, who was the first public health nurse in Montana. Henrietta spent much of her time working on Montana’s Indian Reservations, but these photos appear to be of a Forest Service ranger station. The style of this building is identical to a number of the early (circa 1907-1910) ranger stations found on the Helena and Deerlodge forests. Note that the flag is flying which would indicate that the ranger was home and the apparently later addition of an entryway porch which is in the style of many of the ranger stations built in the 1930s. Note that several buildings can be seen in the background. Some stations for which no photos have been found on the Helena and Deerlodge are one of the ones (probably the first one) on Dry Cottonwood Creek on the east side of the Deerlodge Valley, or either of the two located in Whitetail Park, north of Whitehall.  Does anyone recognize the terrain in the background?
